How to go Green - Dating. This time of year, hearts are everywhere: the shiny red boxes, the message candies, the schmoopie cards: They're unavoidable

And if that's left your heart feeling a little left out without someone to love, turn to our How to Go Green: Dating guide for advice on everything from finding a partner who shares your green vision to (gulp) meeting the parents. Already in a relationship? We've got you covered there too, with tips for choosing green date activities, giving sustainable gifts, and setting the mood -- all of which make it easy to fall in love without giving up your first great passion: the environment.

The world puts a lot of emphasis on dating: it's the point of reality TV shows, the plot of countless movies and sitcoms, and the subject of endless conversations among pretty much all single people (and their friends). The general consensus? It's not always easy to find someone you want to spend all your free time with—and if you are passionate about environmental causes, or only date vegans, or won't look twice at someone who owns an SUV, your pool just got a lot smaller.

But there are plenty of ways to find a match that shares your love of all things eco-friendly. And once you've met, it's not so hard to make sure your entire relationship—from your first date to your first time meeting the parents—falls on the green side. Choosing green restaurants that serve locally-sourced food, toasting your anniversary with organic champagne, and settling in on sheets made from sustainable fibers all make falling in love, well, natural.

Useful tips of the three R’s

Reuse
Think about how you can reuse things, rather than just throwing them in the bin:

  • Jam jars, takeaway trays and ice-cream containers make handy food storage containers
  • Envelopes can be used again if you stick labels over the address
  • Buy rechargeable batteries and products instead of disposable ones
  • Buy products such as washing powder in refillable containers
  • Take your old clothes and books to charity shops

Reduce
Every year we throw away 165 million tonnes of waste in the UK.

Fact: We use around 150 million plastic bags every week in the UK - most of which end up in landfill sites and take 500 years to decompose (Waste Online
Tip: Reduce the number of plastic bags you use - get a fabric or reusable bag.

Fact: Eight million nappies are thrown away every day in the UK, making up four per cent of landfill waste
Tip: Investigate using a nappy laundry service rather than disposable ones.

Fact: UK consumers spend up to £15 billion per year on food packaging.
Tip: Choose loose produce where possible and avoid excess packaging.

Fact: Britons receive nearly 4 billion items of direct mail per year, one-third of it unread.
Tip: Stop unwanted mail being sent to you - register at the Mailing Preference Service (www.mpsonline.org.uk).

Recycle
Not just your paper, cans and bottles but also other domestic waste.
Almost a third of our domestic waste could go straight onto the compost heap. Composting organic waste is the most efficient way to reduce the methane emitted by landfill sites:
Turn your tea bags and food scraps into compost to send nutrients back to the soil, where they can be reused. Contact your council for details of local composting schemes. For more information please see www.recycle-more.co.uk
